The 1926 Convention of Limits: the final treaty establishing the modern boundary between Spain and Portugal

Abstract
Nearly a century after the establishment of the modern Spanish-Portuguese boundary, this study focuses on reconstructing the delimitation and demarcation process of the southern border between the two countries, formalized through the 1926 Convention of Limits. Following seven decades of negotiations and fieldwork by the Boundary Commission, this bilateral treaty marked the final stage in the territorial configuration of la Raya. Utilizing previously unexplored archival sources, this work details the complexities involved in establishing the southern boundary, addressing questions about why a single treaty was not initially signed, how the 1926 Convention of Limits came to be formalized, and which key actors were involved. Thus, the study highlights the importance of the Boundary Commission in the development of border work and the effectiveness of the agreement in resolving territorial disputes, except in the case of the Olivenza conflict, which remains unresolved to this day.
